Preserving, Storing and Displaying Important Papers: Documents, Prints, Watercolors and Maps

Conservators Mary Studt and Wendy Cowan, proprietors of Richmond Conservators of Works on Paper will discuss the art, science and practice of conservation as it relates to the preservation of paper artifacts.
Learn about the composition of paper and the materials associated with it. Gain insight into the best techniques for housing, protecting and displaying documents, prints, watercolors and maps, and take home samples of approved storage and display materials.
Attendees will make use of a “decision tree” to distinguish issues they can address on their own, those that can be dealt with by a responsible framer, and those requiring the skills of a conservator.
As a case study, the presenters will describe their intensive treatment of the rare and important 1755 Map of the British and French Dominions in North America by Northern Neck native Dr. John Mitchell, now on view at the Urbanna Museum and Visitors Center.
All participants are welcome to bring one or two paper artifacts for consultation and to serve as examples when discussing housing, display and options for treatment.
